In Memory of our dear friend Tom Butz
Family Promise of Montgomery County honors the faithful service of Tom Butz.
July 31, 1934 – February 5, 2017
Tom was a founding trustee and board member of Family Promise under our original name, Montgomery County Interfaith Hospitality Network, in December, 2000. Tom served on the board for numerous years, and volunteered his time in service to Family Promise in many ways, including mowing grass and cleaning gutters at the Day Center, and hosting duties at his home church.
Tom was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 31, 1934, and died on February 5, 2017 in Wichita, Kansas. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Nancy Butz; three children – Libby Smith, Tom A. Butz and Laura Gray; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and siblings David, Charles and Mary.
Tom worked as a chemical engineer for Dow Chemical Company, and retired from Dow in the mid-1990s. He and Nancy then relocated to Conroe, Texas where they enjoyed living on Lake Conroe. Tom volunteered his time in faithful service to Family Promise, to his church – First United Methodist Church of Conroe (as a Sunday School teacher, new member coordinator, and committee member), to the Lake Conroe Association (where he served as Treasurer for many years).
After Nancy suffered a stroke in December, 2012, Tom stepped down from his service with Family Promise to care for Nancy. After some health challenges of his own, he and Nancy relocated to Wichita, Kansas in October, 2016 to be closer to and in the care of their son, daughter-in-law and daughters.
We are thankful for the faithful and life-changing legacy which Tom leaves with us. Thank you, Tom. We will miss you!
